The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially released an important press release regarding the CUET-UG 2026 examination on 05 May 2026. As one of the largest computer-based examinations administered globally, CUET-UG 2026 has witnessed unprecedented interest with a staggering 15,68,866 registered candidates. NTA has successfully completed the primary city allocation phase, achieving remarkable success: 96.6% of candidates have been allotted one of their preferred cities, and 79% of candidates have been allocated their absolute first choice of city.
However, due to extreme demand and computer-based test (CBT) capacity limitations in highly-populated areas, 3.4% of candidates could not be accommodated within their preferred selections. To rectify this, the NTA has opened a dedicated re-allocation window on a first-come-first-serve basis starting today. This window allows affected candidates to log in and select from vacant slots in alternate cities to ensure they have an allocated testing center.
The scale of this examination is monumental, featuring 12,906 distinct subject combinations scheduled across 35 shifts nationwide. Candidates were given the flexibility to opt for up to five subjects, culminating in an aggregate of 67,56,321 test instances with an average of 4.31 subjects selected per candidate. Approximately 43% of all candidates (representing 6,74,352 registrations) originate from just three states: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi, which created exceptional logistical demand on CBT infrastructure within those regions.
